Resident Artist Series: Raku
In this 5 day Raku firing class, students need to have bisque pots ready to fire. Pots need to be made in advance so that we can spend class time glazing and firing. Students need to think about having 10-15 small to medium size pots to fire. No pots bigger than 12 inches in any direction. There is no Open Studio after class.
Form and Fire: A Handbuilding and Soda Firing Workshop
This immersive workshop introduces participants to essential handbuilding techniques: slab, coil, and bisque molds, while offering an opportunity to load, fire, and finish work in The Bascom’s soda kiln. Students will create functional forms in stoneware and may also bring pre-bisque fired cone 10 stoneware or porcelain pieces to glaze, decorate, and fire. Instruction will cover glazing methods, the use of flashing slips, kiln loading, and the firing process, with participants actively involved in soda introduction and kiln management. The final session includes unloading and discussion of results, along with an exploration of soda kiln design for those interested.

Earthday Monoprints
Explore the possibilities of printmaking through experimentation with recycled detritus in honor of Earthday! Discarded waste and single use plastics, find new life on paper when utilized to create texture and light through the making of mono-prints. In this one day workshop, students will put to use found and gathered materials to create gelli-plate and pulled inked plates. Students will learn how to use the studio press as well as methods to create endless prints at home. This type of art making requires no experience and results in beautiful pieces that can be used as the basis for later prints, collages, or enjoyed on their own! Recycled plastic and styrofoam will be provided but students are encouraged to bring their own detritus for experimentation!
