Sculpting Stories in Clay
All skill levels are welcome to join ceramic artist Taylor Robenalt for a three-day workshop that explores the art of storytelling through clay. Together, we will discover how to build narrative-driven sculptures that weave personal meaning with imaginative forms.
Taylor will demonstrate techniques for constructing flora, fauna, and other symbolic elements, while also guiding participants through the technical aspects of hand building and finishing. We’ll begin with the foundations—coil, slab, and pinch—before moving into strategies for breaking down a sculpture into parts and understanding clay timing for successful assembly. Along the way, you’ll learn how to achieve crisp lines and smooth, refined surfaces with simple tools.
In addition to technical skills, we’ll also explore conceptual ideas, discussing the role of symbolism, imagery, and personal narrative in shaping your work. By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only sharpen your ceramic techniques but also create a sculpture that reflects your own story and artistic voice.
