Perceptual Color: Seeing, Mixing, and Painting with Sensitivity
Color is fundamental to any kind of painting, but it is also one of the most complex, challenging, and personal aspects. During this three day workshop, we will develop our skills in perceiving, mixing, and using color with sensitivity. While this is not a traditional color theory class, we will dig into how we think about mixing colors, get to know various color “personalities”, and experiment with ways to use our palette to mix any color we want. We will work on a series of short still life exercises that will challenge us to engage with specific aspects of color. These exercises will expand our personal color language and help us to observe and mix colors with greater acuity. Later, we will work on more open-ended paintings based on direct observation. If weather and time permit, we may paint outside on the Bascom campus. There will be demos, discussions, individual guidance, and group critiques.
This class will be great for intermediate or advanced painters working in all styles that want to strengthen their use and understanding of color. Some foundational painting experience is required. Acrylic and oil painters are welcome.
