Listening to the Land: Contemplative Nature Photography with Susan Patrice (online)

Bascom Web Banner Susan Patrice

Tuesdays, February 7th - March 14, 6:00 - 7:30 PM, Six-week online class.
Cost: $225 (need-based scholarships are available).

Class size: 8 students

Many of us yearn to create photographs full of feeling and emotion. Contemplative photography offers us a path. By listening to the land and centering our practice in humility and wonder, we deepen our connection with the natural world and our photographs come alive with meaning and beauty.

This six-week online class will help you take your landscape photography to a whole new level. Inspiration will be sparked through photographic exercises, time photographing in the field, and supportive critiques.

Photographers of all levels are welcome and even seasoned practitioners should find value in this unique approach to the medium. Participants will be offered the opportunity to have their photographs juried into the Listening to the Land: Reimagining the Bartram Trail community exhibition in Fall 2023.

If you are unfamiliar with the Zoom platform, technical assistance will be provided so that each person can share their photographs with confidence and ease.

Susan Patrice is a documentary photographer and contemplative artist. Her photography and public installations focus primarily on the Appalachian landscape and its people and feature intimate images that touch deeply into questions of place, belonging, and ecological personhood. She lives in Marshall, NC, where she is the director of Makers Circle and a co-founder of the Kinship Photography Collective.

Since 2016, her work has primarily explored the power of beauty and its impact on our feelings of connection and kinship. Through the use of handmade cameras built in response to the land, she engages in deep conversation with the places and persons of her native region. Her most recent project, The Land of My Body, combines her work as a documentary photographer and citizen artist as she explores her family’s multigenerational legacy of trauma and the healing power of photography to transform and reimagine the past.
