Exploring the many colors in a subject using only the primary colors.

Create paintings using three principles: line, tone and color. We will begin with a simple still life drawing on canvas followed by demonstrations and discussions of tone (the lights and darks that build depth) and then introduce color. Using only the primary colors we will discuss color theory and practice mixing colors for our paintings. This is a perfect workshop for the beginner. Paintings will be completed step by step with simple demonstrations and one on one instruction. Expect a safe learning atmosphere, lots of fun and great relaxing music.

Embracing the Unknown in Landscape Painting

Instructor(s): Ben Hamburger
$500 for Members; $575 for Non-Members

As landscape painters, even when we become proficient at painting our desired subjects, the work can sometimes lack a deeper energy or sense of wonder. Often, the power of art lies beyond the subject, and within the interaction between artist and materials. I find that getting to that special place involves a balance of control and chaos. And chaos can be scary!

During this class, we will delve into some landscape painting fundamentals such as composition, value structure, and massing to develop a strong foundation from which we can play and experiment. Later, we will get into some creative constraints and non-traditional paint application techniques to get you out of your comfort zone and into the unknown. This class will include some lecture, discussion of paintings from throughout history, demonstrations, plenty of time for creative experimentation, and critiques.

While we will be working mostly from reference photos (or previously made landscape studies), the concepts in this class will also apply well to onsite observational and imaginative work. This class is open to acrylic and/or oil painters of all abilities.

Our ancestors all had stories and secrets; some are passed down through the generations and others are kept hidden forever. Often, it’s the secrets of the heart that are kept under wraps. Let’s create a sculpture that tells a story of those secrets, either current day or past! All skill levels welcome as we create a bust (male or female) in this three day workshop.

Mindfulness 1 Web Banner

I had an inheritance from my father,
It was the moon and the sun.
And though I roam all over the world,
The spending of it’s never done.
― Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls

Through mindfulness we become more aware of influences in our lives including those that we have taken in from others. As we become more conscious of these gifts and challenges, we can more effectively choose whether and how to express them. To begin the series, we will engage in mindfulness practices exploring our personal legacies and how these inheritances have contributed to our lives. We will then practice slow art applying awareness-based skills to viewing the works of two generations of glassblowers.
