Full STEAM Ahead! Deepen Understanding of Math through the Arts - A Workshop for Educators

Full STEAM Ahead Deepen Understanding of Math through the Arts Web Banner

You will experience active learning strategies to teach science and math through art, movement, dance, drama, and poetry. You will leave with practical tools you can use on Monday to spark curiosity, deepen engagement, and strengthen memory through the arts, in science and math.

Two professional development opportunities for Macon and Jackson County Teachers will take place at The Bascom in Highlands March 4 and April 15. Teachers will actively engage with the art in the Bascom and connect it to math or science. The Southeast Center for Arts Integration’s educators and teaching artists, who have decades of classroom experience, will lead the workshops. They will incorporate brain research, multiple intelligences and social emotional learning with the NC Standard Course of Studies in Math and English Language Arts, and Essential Standards in Science, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts, and Dance.

Workshops are FREE!

Coffee, snacks, and lunch provided.

A Certificate of Completion, that teachers can submit to their district for CEU credit, will be provided.

Deepen Understanding of Science through the Arts

Why and how do we use movement and theatre in the classroom? What connections can we make between visual art and science? How can students learn science through dance and drama? I’m not a dancer—how would I lead a science-and-dance lesson? What connections can we find between State Standards in Dance, Theatre Arts, Visual Arts, and Science? Join us for a fun, interactive, and experiential day of professional development that answers these questions.

Participants will:

  • learn simple structures from art, dance, and drama that can teach science concepts
  • gain confidence with using movement and drama games in the classroom
  • understand how learning through the arts can boost memory, aid kinesthetic learners, foster creative thinking, and teach SEL
  • discover natural connections between visual arts, dance, theatre arts, and science
  • outline a lesson plan they can use in class
  • receive a certificate of completion to submit to district offices for CEU credit.

Math and Visual Arts Connections

With Jef Lambdin, Mime and Teaching Artist

Find out how to use arts-integrated teaching to illuminate mathematical concepts. Printmaking, poetry, dance, theater, music—the elements of all these art forms correlate with many concepts in math. Join us as we explore how to teach math using art and the artwork displayed at the Bascom for inspiration.

What will you know or be able to do after this workshop?  By experiencing and exploring several demonstration lessons in which various art forms are integrated with Math, you will gain an understanding of how to imagine, design, and create arts-integrated lessons in your own teaching practice.
