Workshops

“Bowers – Birds” Sculpture in Nature and from Nature with Karen Beall
On Location

June 8–10, 10 am–4 pm
$125 Bascom members/ $150 non-members
Join this intergenerational workshop and learn about site-specific sculpture and traditional sculpture all from natural materials. Spend the first two days creating “bowers” for an exciting public art project (learn more here) at three different sites in Highlands. Then enjoy a studio project: building a bird sculpture from natural materials, beginning with the construction of an armature.

Ceramics: Leaf-like Platters, Plates and Bowls with Karen Beall
June 15–16, 10 am–4 pm
$225 Bascom members/ $250 non-members
Students collaborate with nature during this workshop, making ceramic platters, plates or bowls by using a relief mold of leaves. Students will first make plaster molds from leaves found on The Bascom campus, then press slabs of clay into the plaster relief to get an impression. The slabs will then be placed into a variety of soft molds to create unique utilitarian or sculptural forms.

Clay with Britt Ammann

Studio Barn, 10 am–3 pm with lunch break
$85 Bascom members/$100 non-members
•Saturday, June 19, Vases: Short and Tall: Students will be working with clay slabs, which can be formed into either short bud vases or tall elegant vases. The class will collect objects from nature to texturize vase surfaces.
• Wednesday, June 30, Coils, Coils and More Coils: After viewing the sculpture work of Patrick Dougherty, come to the clay studio and let your inspiration run wild. We will be making clay sculptures out of coils, an ancient technique. Bring your imagination!
• Monday, July 5, Toad Houses: Large and Small: This is a fun day of making domed houses for our bug-eating friends in the yard! Your house can be decorated with clay bugs, or you can tell a story with drawings.
• Thursday, July 15, Family Tree Project: Trace out tree shapes on clay slabs. The roots will be the placement for the oldest generations, the trunk for parents and grandparents, the branches and leaves for children. Bring your family history and create a family heirloom.
• Monday, August 9, Wind Chimes in the Mountains: Bring leaves from your yard or collect them off The Bascom’s Nature Trail to trace shapes for the chimes. Textures will be used from nature to change the look and tone of your chimes. Leave with your own musical treasure.

Saturday Mornings with Fayne Ansley

Studio A, 10 am–noon
$25 Bascom members/ $30 non-members
• Saturday, June 19, Collage with Fun Papers: Delve into the limitless world of paper! Students will use glue and a multitude of colorful printed papers, many handmade, and a variety of scissors to cut and pink and make great textures.
• Saturday, July 3, The American Flag: Patriotic Painting on Canvas: Add your brushstrokes to this gigantic group-painted flag and celebrate the 4th of July in a painterly fashion.
• Saturday, July 10, Painting on Canvas: Flowers from the Garden: In the style of Gustav Klimt and in honor of The Bascom’s Mountains in Bloom garden festival, learn about this beloved artist’s style and emulate his rich colors in a painting blooming with flowers.
• Saturday, July 24, Drawing With Your Grandchild: Learn how to share your love of drawing with your child or grandchild and gain an understanding of what is reasonable to expect of children learning to draw at various ages. No art experience needed.
• Saturday, July 31, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers: Painting on Canvas: Enjoy an introduction to several of Van Gogh’s sunflower paintings, including demonstration of the palette knife and learning to use it on a painting. Fresh sunflowers will be our subject matter.
• Saturday, August 7, Cakes, Cupcakes, and Donuts in the Style of Wayne Thiebaud: After taking a look at some “sweet painting” by this American artist, have fun painting your own confections on canvas while enjoying yummy treats.
• Saturday, August 14, Pointillism and Georges Seurat: Look at some examples of the artist who created the style of “Pointillism,” and then make your own pointillist (landscape) painting with Q-Tips and other common household items.
• Saturday, August 21, Making Cork Animals: Create a menagerie out of wine corks, toothpicks and other simple embellishments.
